I came across this in a list of hikes done by the U3A (University of the 3rd Age), and it was nearby, in the south of Jo’burg. Checking it on the Internet it was mainly advertised as a cycling trail. I had some misgivings with pictures in my head of continuously jumping out of the way to let the cyclists come racing through with some near misses, some disgruntled cyclists and some aggravated walkers. I didn't need to worry, this place is a model for peaceful coexistence of cyclists and walkers.
This is a nature reserve with game, a continuation along the mountain of the Klipriverberg Nature Reserve.
We met at 9 o'clock, paying R20 per hiker and having a safety talk on how to accommodate the cyclists we were off. There is a variety of trails, we selected the easy one. Along the plain, we did manage 8 kilometres. Near the half way mark we decided for a short excursion up the rocks to sit higher up for a view.
We had it all planned such that on the way back to base we would have lunch at the table in the middle of the field, but then the rain came down and we couldn't stop. We just had to keep on going, that way we were back at just over 1 o'clock and went straight to the bakery, where we had coffee and cake. The lunch I took home. And I forgot who was there: me, of course, Janine, Jenny, Frans, Judith, Oliver, Liz and Will. The last two are new to us but not entirely. They were with us 10 years ago at the Klipriverberg, I remember that as Jim’s last hike.
